Interests
The Prince and The Duchess are both keen supporters of the arts. Their Royal Highnesses regularly attend concerts and theatre, sometimes as fundraising events for charities they support.
This is reflected in The Duchess’s patronage of the London Chamber Orchestra, St John’s, Smith Square, the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra and the Theatre Royal in Bath. Their Royal Highnesses are Joint Patrons of the restored Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, Yorkshire.
Her Royal Highness loves horses and is Patron of the British Equestrian Federation, the Brooke, the Lady Joseph Trust and Ebony Horse Club, a small charity in Brixton, South London which provides riding lessons to children from deprived backgrounds.
When at Birkhall, their home in Scotland, Their Royal Highnesses enjoy fishing, walking and cross-country skiing in the countryside and they both share a passion for gardening and painting.
The Duchess owns two Jack Russell terriers, Beth and Bluebell, who were both rescue puppies from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London.
She is also a member of the Tetbury Evening Women’s Institute and the Llandovery Women's Institute (WI).
Animals
The Duchess’s interest in animals and animal welfare is reflected in many of her Patronages and charitable visits.
The Duchess takes a keen interest in horses and often attends racing and other equestrian events. The Duchess is Patron of the British Equestrian Federation and regularly attends the London International Horse Show. In 2007, she also became Patron of the Scottish National Equestrian Centre.
During Their Royal Highnesses' tours of Egypt and Pakistan in 2006, Her Royal Highness visited the Brooke Hospital for Animals. Later that year, The Duchess became President of the Brooke which operates worldwide providing free veterinary treatment for horses and donkeys, and advice for their owners on how to care for them.
In 2007, she became Patron of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, the charitable arm of the Kennel.
Her Royal Highness is also Patron of the Animal Care Trust, part of the Royal Veterinary Hospital.
In November 2006, The Duchess became Patron of the Langford Trust for Animal Health and Welfare which is a charity that supports the University of Bristol Veterinary School to promote the practice, advancement and teaching of veterinary science.
In October 2010, The Duchess visited Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, where she opened the new cattery, as well as visiting some of the home’s residents. Her Royal Highness subsequently adopted two Jack Russell terriers, Beth and Bluebell, from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
