Titles

As the second wife of the heir apparent to the British throne Charles, Prince of Wales, she legally takes the title of Princess of Wales. Instead of using the title of Princess of Wales:

  • Her Royal Highness uses the title HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.
  • In Scotland she is known as HRH The Duchess of Rothesay.
  • During visits to Chester, Their Royal Highnesses use their titles The Earl and Countess of Chester.
  • Dame Grand Cross of the Victorian Order (GCVO)

The Royal Victorian Order is given by The Queen to people who have served her or the Monarchy in a personal capacity.  The Order was, and is, entirely within the Sovereign's personal gift.
These may include members of the Royal Family, officials of the Royal Household, and sometimes British Ambassadors who have helped organise a State Visit to a particular country.

The Order was founded in April 1896 by Queen Victoria as a way of rewarding personal service to her, on her own initiative rather than by ministerial recommendation.
